I have a VL Web function with a numeric input field. When I type non-numeric characters it ignores then (which is good) but when I tab to the next field 'NaN' is displayed in the first field. How can I remove this behaviour?

This is undoubtedly a bug. You shouldn't need to do anything.

Out of curiosity, is this happening on the latest EPC (140020)?

This has been identified as an issue with using Edit Mask 'Z'.

It will be fixed for SP1.
